I was with Ferrel Messier on his last patrol, I think it was mid-January 1969. At the time, Spc. 4 Messier was serving in the Combined Reconnaisance-Intellegence Platoon (CRIP) based in Vinh-Kim. I don't know from what regular line company he had been forwarded to me from. We lost two that morning to a command-detonated mine. He was a good soldier (as were all the CRIP guys), but unfortunately as platoon leader, I did not have close relationship with him. He was good friends with Sgt. Virginia (whose I.D. particulars I do not know).
