The big picture of what is happening with the Reunion

This forum was created for information about the very successful first battalion stand alone reunion in June of 2015. It remains to remember the success and perhaps to encourage planning of another such reunion in the future.

The big picture of what is happening with the Reunion

Postby Niner Alpha » Wed Feb 04, 2015 3:51 pm

Some are coming to his reunion idea for the first time by way of the postcards. To catch you up on how this thing came about and where it is heading here is an outline of how we have gotten to now.

In the beginning Jerry White and myself, Robert Stewart got to talking about Regiment Association reunions over the years and how there had never been a stand alone 6/31st reunion and about how nobody ever had contacted the entire list of those who had been located over the years. We also talked about how neither of us were going to California to the Regiment Reunion nor next year to the Ft. Drum Regiment reunion. We had come to the conclusion the Association was going in the wrong direction as far as a reunion of our battalion was concerned and we felt a serious attempt at a reunion of the 6th Battalion of the 31st Infantry ought to be made.

The first thing was to determine if we weren't alone in this thought. Last August a mass email was sent out to well over 500 people we have email addresses for asking if they would be interested. This got an encouraging response so we conducted further surveys to determine most popular locations and most favorable times.

Determining Nashville as the first choice by a few votes margin, and early June as the preferred time, we set out to find a hotel host in Nashville. Tim Miller who has experience in such things undertook this effort. He, after a couple of months met with no success and then I tried it and also met with no success. The failure was because hotel venues that were decent enough to use had jacked their rates up because of special events happening in Nashville during this time. Some just came back with totally ridiculous offers and others didn't make any offer at all. Holiday Inn Nashville, as an example, wanted $400 a night! And Holiday Inn is just barely respectable in most areas of the country and $400 a night was just an insult rather than say they weren't interested. The best rates were twice what we were shooting for to make it affordable to the most people.

Then we went back to the drawing board. Branson was the number 2 choice from our previous survey. After positive responses to a new survey, we decided to go ahead with Branson. So... then the search was on for a hotel again. There were some dead ends there too as several hotels were rejected before we landed on Branson Towers which gave us rates we thought were reasonable along with a room to use for meeting and greeting at no extra charge.... and they had some extra features, like a free breakfast as well as no parking problem. And they are owned by a group that can provide us with an overflow location for the same rates.

The next step became the contact stage and with the overwhelming numbers we were faced with the only practical way to communicate was a mailing and that was going to take some money. Jerry sent out some emails asking for assistance and in a weeks time we had enough to do this project. And a few guys still wanted to send some money for incidentals. This put the project into the fast lane and relieved Jerry and me of expense we were at the same time willing to undertake when we entered into this. And after ordering and receiving 2000 postcards and confirming as best we could the present address of about 1500 individuals through familytreenow.com , we did the mailing to those without email addresses. We will continue to make mass emails to our email list as we go along. So more than 2000 people will get a notice of this event. In addition Jerry White sent out 260 letters with the postcards inside as a special invitation to old 3rd Platoon Delta members.

Things to keep in mind:

There is no set agenda. Name tags will be provided and there will be a meeting room. In addition we will be keeping account of who attends and share the information and help people to link up.

We have some funds left so there will be some refreshments for as much as we have funds for.... at the moment about $600.

We don't expect anything like 2000 people. We only felt it important that, for the first time ever, everybody who might be interested is contacted. We would be happy if we could exceed the largest number ever to attend a 31st Regiment reunion back when the Association was most attractive. And that number is less than 10% of the people contacted in this effort to achieve this.

The only "event " that you should expect is a Memorial service that Jerry White will organize for some time during the reunion.

There are no fees of any sort involved. All you have to do is show up. If you stay at the Banson Towers you are only obligated for your room , and that's between you and the hotel and doesn't concern Jerry or me. And we get no kick back in any way shape or form.

By all means, bring your wives and, or, family with you. This is meant as a casual event. It's a vacation in which you are likely to meet again some guys you served with in Vietnam and can find out how life has treated them over the years. There is no larger purpose.

And know this. Jerry White and I are getting nothing out of this. We pay for our hotel rooms same as everybody else. There is nothing we get out of this but the satisfaction of doing it. It's our last hurrah as far as the 6/31st is concerned. We .. at least me... aren't ever going to do this again. We will do all we can to make it a success.

As of today 52 rooms have been booked. We have another 50 that can be booked and after that will come a point at some juncture where reservations will move to an alternate hotel in the same chain. It's all looking pretty good....and it's only the 9th of February.

We are now at the point there have been 96 reservations and the overflow hotel will start taking reservations after the next 10 or so new reservations fill our reserved capacity. If you want to stay at the main hotel... make your reservations now.
