We think of the ones who died in Vietnam but the dieing didn't end in Vietnam. On our Obit page a quick look shows 3 guys died in 1969 back in the world. 1 guy died in 1970 back in the world. 3 in 1971. 4 in 72. 6 in 73 and 5 in 74. Saigon fell in April of 1975. They didn't even know how it would end when they died of whatever individual cause.

Our obit page lists 610 guys who have died since the war. Some of those guys, like Col. Logan said at the reunion, never actually came home in a real sense. More of us will check out of this world this year. Some will die as the result of things like Agent Orange, and self inflicted causes like alcoholism and smoking that the war encouraged as well as any number of other mental issues that the war provoked.

Next time somebody waves the flag and talks about standing up to "our enemies" in places that are different but still about as far away as Vietnam and all in favor of sending some boys to do the fighting so they can be heroes too and make America safe and if they die be honored on some future Memorial Day...just remember that Obama just announced he's selling arms to Vietnam now and if you look in your closet and see that your New Balance tennis shoes were made by the side that won in Vietnam. And then ask yourself what dieing for your country really amounts to.
