Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and
Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and
Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.
Well we know how that lasting peace thing worked out and we had WWII because they didn't produce a lasting peace out of WWI.
Eisenhower, after it looked like we didn't have the war thing ended, decided to exchange Armistice day for Veterans day to honor the guys in WWII and Korea as well as WWI.
Now after our war, Vietnam, that did end eventually after a bunch of riots and demonstrations... we now have the slow motion but never ending war brought to us by our elected politicians. The same politicians that can't agree on much of anything else ... have a pressing need to kill some "terrorists" and to spy on everybody in the world in order to find them all.
What I'm wondering this "Veterans Day" is if we veterans of Vietnam are going to live long enough to see a new "Armistice Day" and be thankful that the perpetual war has finally ended and that there is actual peace in this world as far as the USA is concerned.
In the mean time, I think tomorrow some restaurants are giving out free meals to veterans and most towns have some parade with plenty of marching high school ROTC kids being groomed to get in line at the door marked .....recruiter open for business, come on in.
The US really loves its veterans now days...unlike us when we came home from Vietnam. They need to now days....perpetual war is like that.
