Finding anything in Vietnam is quite a challenge. If not for Google Earth, I don't know what I would have done. The map I had bought was marginal, most roads have no signs identifing the name/number of cross roads/streets, and many people (like me...I must admit) know how to get someplace but don't know the names/numbers of roads/streets. Thus we were sent down the wrong road several miles before I realized that I had seen no landmarks that I had recorded on my hand-drawed map (from Google Earth). I realized right away that hand-drawn maps from Google Earth was the only way that I was going to find anything. Anyway.....after a few miles, we turned around, went back to Duc Hoa and actually found someone who knew where Hwy 825...which we were looking for...was located.
The "crossroads"...where Hwy 825 turns north toward Hau Nghia is now quite a good size "village/town". The road that, during the war, that you remembered continuing a few hundred meters further west from where Hwy 825 turns north..is basically no more. Well.....some of it is there, but it appears to be a government or business compound (modern). We followed the dirt roads/paths that you can see on Google Earth to the south, back to the west, then back to the north to find the location defined on our Google Earth shot.
Pictures follow....again...two emails.
