Any interest in organizing a second Stand Alone Reunion?

Reunions of any size and any discription. If you have one to promote, this is the place. If you have photos or comments about past reunions this is also the place.

Any interest in organizing a second Stand Alone Reunion?

Postby Niner Alpha » Wed Nov 18, 2015 11:08 am

Back over a decade ago a number of us got interested in reunion because of the internet and seeing that it was possible to reach people we thought we would never cross paths with again. We worked to gather contact information, starting at this site and our original guest book and then undertook paid searches using old orders that guys shared with us to search the names. That led to encouraging people to join the 31st Regiment Association because it was a going organization that put on reunions and had a link to the 6/31st by regiment number ...even though regiments were not in the table of organization when the 6th battalion was created.

Back at the beginning... 2003, 2004, 2005... very few 6/31st guys even knew the 31st Association existed. The Association was created by, and primarily for, guys who served in battalions of the 31st Regiment in Korea during the long years of occupation after the Korean War and they included those in the Regiment going back as far as the unit of organization existed previously. At that time they were only interested in us in a peripheral way. However, as far as we were concerned, their organization was aimed at the one thing that we were interested in....meeting again and making contact with guys we remembered from our war years. They produced a scheduled reunion each year. So we sought the Association out on purpose. We actively directed 6/31st Veterans to the Association and the Association met the need for a reunion gathering point. Recently, Branson showed that reaching out to as many as possible, particularly the great majority who weren't Association members, and never sought out by the Association itself, could produce a result better than anything the Association ever achieved before or is increasingly less likely to achieve in the future. Even with many former 6/31st veterans as association "officers" their fixation has become the modern potential membership value of the active 4th battalion and not the 6th of the 31st veterans who are naturally now into retirement years.

With the first stand alone reunion at Branson, with no help nor encouragement received, beyond a brief mention in a newsletter between obituaries, from the Regiment Association, we reached out by email to over 500 people every month for many months and in addition to nearly four times that number by mailed post cards based on addresses that were researched and confirmed over many hours of work by both Jerry and myself. Even with the Association loyalists not attending, and with a significant number of formerly involved veterans now deceased, it was the largest gathering since the war and a successful and worthwhile.

Another such reunion could happen... but it will need some organization. Jerry and I had our turn. If anybody is interested to the point of offering to join a group to produce another 6th of the 31st reunion post under this remark. And.. this is not asking would you attend, this is asking would you do some work to make one happen?

Jerry and I have done a lot of the path finding already. We could help in support and advice for a new reunion.... but we want to see others get involved and take it forward if there is to be a next one. What about it?

I know there are several groups dedicated to particular companies and some to particular platoons and particular times. There are some that have met regularly for many years. There are some that have only recently become active. We saw some of those groups at Branson... the Bravo contingent comes particularly to mind.

I heard a number of people express interest at Branson in seeing another 6th of the 31st Stand Alone reunion. Many were interested but were reticent in accepting the responsibly of producing another reunion. Probably this was because it is an unfamiliar and intimidating task to contemplate without having any previous experience. However, if the leaders of the several independent reunions could join together and share the planning and responsibilities another such large battalion reunion could be done.

We found with the Branson reunion that if a serious effort is being made, guys will donate more than enough money in mostly small individual amounts to provide for what is needed to get the word out and to provide the incidentals necessary to make a reunion happen. The hard part is getting people to plan, organize, be responsible and do the work that is necessary.

You will note nobody representing the Association has objected to what I have written in this string. None have spoken up to say that the Association will actually seek out and invite and encourage attendance at their "100th" Regiment reunion this coming year beyond the 200 or so 6/31st guys who will get their "quarterly" news letters.

The latest Association double mailing now makes it clear that the Association is going to an every other year reunion schedule.....although there is the stated chance to vote "no" by mail in a gesture of constitutional protocol ..... it's just a smoke and mirrors gesture and the I's will have it without fail because those members not expressing a vote are counted as in favor of whatever the insiders want and thus rubber stamping the decision already made. Yet this is good news that there will be no reunion for the Association in 2017. 2017 would be a perfect year to produce another stand alone battalion reunion if anybody, or any group of guys, wants to take on the challenge. There will be no excuse for guys holding out for the Regiment Reunion out of loyalty.

Alpha (Robert Stewart) and Delta (Jerry White) coordinated the first Stand Alone 6/31st Reunion......now it's Bravo, Charlie, Echo, or HHC's turn. :)

"B" follows "A"...so...How about it Bravo! John "Mac" McIntosh's wife Lisa would be a great coordinator!
