Co. K 31st Infantry M.S.T

Postby Niner Alpha » Wed Dec 07, 2016 12:11 pm

So... aside from the fact that the 31st infantry wasn't really in WWI..being the nearest they came was guarding a railroad in Siberia while the Russians who had bailed out of WWI were fighting among themselves... what does M.S.T stand for? But the steel hat could have been used in a lot of other places and over more than a decade or two. But... somebody has got it up for grabs on ebay at the moment.

No way to know the age of the helmet, they used that style right up to the capture at Bataan.
The only thing I could find on the MST that fit that era was "Maintenance Support Team".
As with most things like that on ebay, you can say that it's whatever you want it to be.....

After doing some research...of questionable legitimacy admittedly... I can't find any US or other country that used such a helmet with a liner like that. None that I've seen have the hooks at six different positions securing the web. I think it was some kind of old construction workers safety helmet made for such a purpose. But... what do I know. However if you search WWI helmets on ebay you will find helmets in much worse condition without any liner are attracting more attention. Probably because the collectors of such things know that this one is fictitious.

Just noticed that the liner attachments are spot welded, was that even a thing
in the WWI era?? All the other helmets listed on ebay have those attachments riveted onto
the helmet.

Here is one that was used by the 31st Infantry during the Siberian expedition in 1918. Not like the one at the auction.

I think I've found the answer. B. F. McDonald made Civil Defense hat from about WWII.
