The Battle of Chosin

Postby Niner Alpha » Wed Nov 02, 2016 10:38 am

There was a PBS history of the Korean War battle of the Chosin Reservoir on tv last night opposite the World Series. What was presented played like a Marine Division retreat story blamed on an Army commander ...MacArthur. What was interesting was the part that the Army and the 31st Regiment played at the Chosin Resevior.

Although more Marines were involved .. a whole division ....on the West side of the Reservoir.. than the Army on the East side of the Reservoir, the Army, particularly the 31st Regiment, took a real beating that was at least as bad as the worst that happened to any of the Marines. This was largely because they were not supported at all by the Army, nor the Marines who had all the problems they could handle, and were left to escape envelopment as best they could against staggering odds. At least that was what I got out of it.

I never before thought of Chosin as what it was.... a large US military catastrophe.... that was really a case of the Chinese entering the war in great numbers and kicking MacArthur's plans right in the teeth and crushing his great assumed victory and turning it into a defeat.

There were a couple of old 31st Infantry present day survivors who make the TV story real and reflect how badly the 31st Infantry troops were chewed up.

You can watch it all on PBS online. Here is one link to the Alabama PBS
