Reunion 2013 31st Inf Regt Assn

Postby Karl Lowe » Sat Aug 18, 2012 2:23 pm

Reunion 2012 was our largest yet with 242 attending. Our guest speaker was MG Steve Townsend who formerly commanded 4-31st Infantry at Ft Drum and took the battalion to Afghanistan just weeks after 9-11-01. 10 active duty members attended (CO, CSM, 8 EM). The battalion was presented 7 new cups for the Shanghai Bowl, each engraved with the name of a Medal of Honor recipient. They also received an annotated picture album of memories of Manila from 1921 to 1936, presented by Rita Springer whose father served there twice and who lived in Manila as a dependent child in 1933-36. Active duty participants received a picture of the 1935 honor guard in commemoration of their participation. The White House tour on Saturday was attended by 142. The memorial service on Sunday morning featured empty chairs facing the audience across which were arrayed a list of the 357 members of 6-31st who died since returning from Vietnam.

Our 97th Anniversary Reunion will be held 8-10 August 2013 at the Holiday Inn at Fairfield, Ohio (near Dayton and the Air Force Historical Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). There will be a reception buffet on Thursday evening and the Reunion banquet on Saturday will be at the Vietnam Hangar of the Air Force Museum. Reunion coordinator is John Howdeshelt (D/6-31st 1969-70), 937-435-0669

Hi great to hear that the reunion was a huge success! As to the attendance, 242 is a great turnout; however, it would still put it behind the 2007 San Antonio reunion where we had 243 men/guests from the 6/31st alone. This 243 count did not include the 4/31st Viet Nam, 4/31st honor guard, WWII, or Korean personnel and their guests. I believe that the final grandtotal for San Antonio was in excess of 300.

What you did in memory of our Brothers who have passed since returning home was truly outstanding! I know that I don't have to say it, but I will say it anyway. Thank you very, very much!

Hopefully Ohio will beat the 2007 San Antonio record.

Best regards

Welcome back to the site, Karl. Thanks for the information. Good to know the reunion was a success with a late surge in attendance.
