Old letters

Charlie battery 1/11th and Delta battery 2/4th were two of the Artillery units that supplied both enlisted members of the FO teams and artillary fire support during different time periods in Vietnam. Please make a post and make yourself known if you played a part in artillery support.

Old letters

Postby Niner Delta » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:45 pm

Am in the middle of moving, found a box of stuff from my late Mother and in this box was every letter that I sent to my parents while I was in Viet Nam. (all 33)
The ones I wrote to my wife were probably unprintable.
Some of the things that I remembered were not correct, according to the letters that I wrote at the time.
Never remembered being at FSB Moore, but in a letter said that I was there with my arty unit, C Btry, 1/11th Artillery. Later on while with D 6/31st at Vinh Kim, I said that they couldn't make up their mind what to call it. First it was Dunaway, then Ranger, then Duke, any one else remember those changes.
Wrote my first letter home on 12-23-68 and last on 7-21-69.
Was going to make a list of interesting events, but doubt anyone wants to hear my ramblings.

I had the ones I received from my wife and the ones I sent her that she saved for a long time. A few years ago I had them in the garage and they were starting to be affected by the bad storage. I pitched the ones my wife sent me because I felt like I was keeping something personal of hers from a time when she was young and a whole other person... it was like I was looking into her pocket book or something. But I kept the ones I sent and brought them into the house. It was what I used for fodder for my posts in the timeline.

I remember that in those letters to my folks, everything was so "sugar-coated" that you would
think I was at Summer Camp instead of a combat zone. My wife knew some of what was really
happening, but she didn't tell my folks. Years later I told them some of the real stories, and they
were shocked............

I never told them anything that would cause them any concern either. Still haven't . My wife overheard me talking to some of the guys at the reunion about something or other and she told me afterward, beside she never hearing that stuff we were talking about before, a lot of wives were remarking about hearing stories for the first time..

I'm sure most of us were the same, wives knew some but not all. Since my wife died,
I have told my sons more than she ever knew.
