Automatic Rifleman

I had one Lt who directed our basic riflemen to fire semi-automatic unless otherwise directed. He had specific riflemen defined as the Automatic Riflemen and these guys always fired auto. This experiment was, however, short-lived, because after firing several magazines fully automatic, we experinced...

Remember

So true Terry........I didn't agree with the war, but I will never forget the men that I served with. It was (at the same time) both the greatest and the worst period of my life. The bond that develops between men in combat cannot be adequately explained or described. It can only be "felt"...

Marriage

Niner,

I am sure that you already know...but just in case you don't. The girl in the header picture on the left top is Tam (Barbara). She had told me that she was 19 years old...at this point in time, she was really 14 or 15.

Marriage

Niner, The ceremony was really just a family thing. It was not an official government approved marriage. I checked into what it would take to get "legally" married in Viet Nam and the paperwork required by the Viet Nam govenment was unbelievable. In addition, I had already been told that i...

Brief Trip Report

Glad to be back Niner..... Well this trip was quite different in that I arrived on a Friday and Tam and I had a wedding ceremony on Sunday. There were approximately 350 people at the wedding which included a four course meal and enough beer and rice whiskey to float a ship. This thing lasted all day...

Welcome aboard Chris, Hey Guys.....Chris is the son of David Morris one of the best M60 gunners that ever carried "the 60". David was one of the "oldtimers" who helped me get my feet on the ground when I first took over as Plt SSG for D Company...3rd Plt. I believe that David was...

Re: 6/31 KIA List

I would like for us to accept this as a challenge. A picture and a personal comment for every one of our lost comrades. Maybe Bruce Swander can help us on this. I hate to see even one of these men with simply an impersonal comment as to his death.

Re: Question for squad leaders and Plt. Sgts

Ok Niner....help me out...what was a "blooker". In my platoon everyone (usually even the Lt) carried 200 rounds of M60 ammo. We even carried 4 M60's...one for each squad. Of course, the gunner and A-gunner carried more than 200 rounds each....along with extra barrels. When we set up, every...

Re: Recondo Badges

Ron, Yes I remember the badges. In Mid 1969 the brass at Dong Tam got real picky about the way that we field troops dressed when we came in from the field. As you probably remember when we got to VN we all had names, rank, etc on our shirts...but as time went by, when we picked up clean clothes, we ...

Re: 6th Battalion 31st Infantry KIA Listing

Chuck, John (Doc) Aldrich was my D Company, 3rd Platoon Medic when we first arrived at Vinh Kim in the summer of 1969. He was officially assigned to HHC company since he was a medic. He was wounded by a booby trap in Dinh Tuong province. At the time, it looked like a $1m wound that would get him hom...

John....I did the same. Peeled back the lid and held it over the C4. I don't remember it getting too hot to hold.
