Dong

FYI:
Not sure about today's conversion rate, but last year 670 dong would equate to about 5 cents USA.

The 50,000 dong bill was worth about $3.50 (which equates to about 3 1/2 days of salary in the small towns/villages).

Socks/Underwear

Bill, Same with most of us....no underwear but we did wear socks. Too many long walks...and afraid of blisters. Back then, early 1969, each unit got only so many blade hours (on the choppers)...so on the last day, when we were supposed to go in to the fire base for a "drying out of the feet&quo...

Vinh Kim

Per my earlier email to you....it was not Moore, FSB Moore was near Cai Lay. I operated out of Moore Jan69 - May69. Then we moved to Vinh Kim for the summer of 69.

Vinh Kim

Anyone remember the "official" name for the small fire base at Vinh Kim? I know that it had one, but my platoon always simply referred to it as Vinh Kim.

Niner,

In D Company if you had been in country for a specified number of months (can't remember how many...but must have been at least 6), some personnel were given an option of going to Hawaii or staying. Reunion - Return Trip to Viet Nam

For you guys going to the reunion, while you are there see if there is any interest in getting together a bunch of guys from the 6/31st for a return trip to Viet Nam. I know that some of the Riverine units have done this, and from what I hear, these were great trips. As a matter of fact, a friend of...

Re: Memories stirred!

Randy, Great to hear from you. Barry and I stayed pretty close via letters up until about the time that he committed suicide. I was going thru a divorce/custody battle at the same time; so during this period, I lost touch. His wife called and asked if I had talked to him because he had left her a le...

Re: Funeral Detail

Sad indeed. From my personal perspective, this didn't say much for the American Legion and VFW chapters that were contacted. This should never have happened. A man/woman who died while fighting for their country deserves much more than this. I am also disappointed in the response by the Army....to h...

Fence around bunker....some felt that this would permit the detonation of RPG rounds prior to their reaching the bunker. I don't know whether it worked or not since I spent very little time on in a bunker.

I can't remember how many rounds but I do remember having a magazine jam during a fire-fight. I realized that I was pulling the trigger and that nothing was happening. My thought was...damn...my M-16 has finally jammed like I had heard it would or my mag was empty.....but it couldn't have been an em...

Present Status in VN

There is some change, I am sure, that is not due to external money....but I don't believe that it is really that significant. I could be wrong. In talking to the few college educated people that I was exposed to, they are unhappy with the lack of progress made by their present government. Things hav...
