Iraq

Niner Delta,

This Iraq thing is sure beginning to look a lot more like VN. All of our government officials and generals are telling us the same thing that they told us 30+ years ago...."the insurgents are a very small minority of the population and the majority of the population suppor...

Paperwork

Hi Vern,

Looks like another 2 - 3 months for the paperwork at this end. After that, assuming everything goes ok, she will be given an interview in Saigon at our US consulate. They will give her a list of things to do....more paperwork and a physical. From what I understand, this can be done...

Ghosts of Rwanda

Did any of you guys watch the documentary last night about the 1993 genocide in Rwanda? The USA and UN should hang their heads in shame. 1 million, mostly unarmed, men, women and children slaughtered as the USA and UN refused to do anything. It was embarrassing to see our government officials lyingl...

M60

Chris....not the same in the Army. Our 60 guys were not part of the Weapons Platoon. They were "our" guys. I believe that there was a Weapons platoon but it was...I believe...the mortar guys. I believe that the standard was suppposed to be 2 M60's per platoon?????...but my platoon had one ...

Vinh Kim

Niner DI, I'll get a picture of this area when I go back later this year, but the old fire base is now a large field where the kids play soccer, volleyball, and practice karate. They were having a very large karate class there during one of my trips. Along the road are some small businesses...mainly...

M79

BTW: Some of my M79 guys preferred to not use the vest but to carry their rounds in two "bags"...one over each shoulder....one hanging on their right side and one hanging on their left side....both around waist level. I seem to remember these being claymore "bags"....but I could ...

Found a website with all the history and info on the M79.
The "Arming" distance was "spec'ed" at 30 meters.

M79

Chris, My M79 guys carried only the M79 and a bunch of rounds. I can't envision anyone being able to carry both an M79 and an M16.....but maybe they did...and no one in my platoon carried a pistol...well, every now and then I would have an M60 machinegunner who would carry one for a while.....but us...

Automatic Rifleman

I had one Lt who directed our basic riflemen to fire semi-automatic unless otherwise directed. He had specific riflemen defined as the Automatic Riflemen and these guys always fired auto. This experiment was, however, short-lived, because after firing several magazines fully automatic, we experinced...

Remember

So true Terry........I didn't agree with the war, but I will never forget the men that I served with. It was (at the same time) both the greatest and the worst period of my life. The bond that develops between men in combat cannot be adequately explained or described. It can only be "felt"...

Marriage

Niner,

I am sure that you already know...but just in case you don't. The girl in the header picture on the left top is Tam (Barbara). She had told me that she was 19 years old...at this point in time, she was really 14 or 15.

Marriage

Niner, The ceremony was really just a family thing. It was not an official government approved marriage. I checked into what it would take to get "legally" married in Viet Nam and the paperwork required by the Viet Nam govenment was unbelievable. In addition, I had already been told that i...

Glad to be back Niner..... Well this trip was quite different in that I arrived on a Friday and Tam and I had a wedding ceremony on Sunday. Re: Tiger Scouts

Welcome aboard Chris, Hey Guys.....Chris is the son of David Morris one of the best M60 gunners that ever carried "the 60". David was one of the "oldtimers" who helped me get my feet on the ground when I first took over as Plt SSG for D Company...3rd Plt. I believe that David was...

Re: 6/31 KIA List

I would like for us to accept this as a challenge. A picture and a personal comment for every one of our lost comrades. Maybe Bruce Swander can help us on this. I hate to see even one of these men with simply an impersonal comment as to his death.
