Re: Awards that weren't actually awarded but entitled to buy

While we're talking awards........ I have posted the combat award before and most said they never got one. I also got 2 Certificate of Appreciation when I was discharged. One from Westmoreland and one from Nixon, and one had my Social Security number on it, they had gotten away from using a serial ...

Re: Awards that weren't actually awarded but entitled to buy

Those hats from 13 years ago, you mean the tan hats with the ".zzn" or the maroon hats with the
6/31st on them. I still have them both and wear the maroon one when I go shooting.......

Re: Cambodia incursion 48 years ago this month

I did get sort of an attitude while I was clearing post in Hawaii, had to see the recruiter and I told him
I was a "20 year man" and he got a big smile until I said....."Yup, 3 in -- 17 out."..... he signed my paper
and I left.

R. Lee Ermey

Sadly, "The Gunny", R. Lee Ermey died last Saturday at age 74. Probably best remembered as the Marine Drill Instructor in the movie "Full Metal Jacket", he was in so many other roles, too. One of my favorites was a tv series he hosted called "Mail Call" that ran from '...

Re: Arty pics in header

I remember the hollow "thunk" when several guys on the ram shoved that 155 round home. Online research says that the 1/84th had 4 batteries in the 9th Div. A - 155 SP B - 155 towed C - 155 towed D - 8 inch SP .......next to us in Dong Tam. I found this PDF about the 9th Div artillery from...

There is also a documentary movie about the 31st Regimental Combat Team fighting at
the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. It's called "Task Force Faith", maybe some day
I will sit down and watch it. Here is the web site.

Re: Ashes and the Wall

There really isn't any place that is so special to me that I would want my ashes scattered. So I will be with the ones I loved the most, hopefully I go before my sons. A while back I decided to take care of things, so everything is already set and paid for. My plaque will match my wife's and all my...

Re: Ashes and the Wall

I can understand why the park service wants people to stop leaving remains..... what should they do with them?? But I also understand why some want to be left there, especially those with little or no family. I would never consider it because my remains will be in the family plot, with my wife, sis...

Re: Delta company made the Ken Burns epic

I did see the irony of the narrator talking of the 9th being pulled out of the delta while showing a unit that didn't leave with the 9th. I was luckier, my artillery unit, C Btry 1/11th, did go to Hawaii. There the 9th was disbanded within a month or two and those of us that weren't shipped all ove...

Re: 9th div. = War crimes - according to lead magazine article

I'm only up to episode 6, but so far it seems there is a lot more about the Marines than about Army. According to the National Archives web site........ Army deaths - 38,224 Marine deaths - 14,884 And according to americanwarlibrary.com....... Army served in RVN - 1,407,000 Marines served in RVN - ...

Re: The draft lottery

Yes, 232 would not be drafted. But you said 231 was the last number drafted, but if you put in
Sept 24 (195) it says you would be drafted, then put in Oct 24 (196) you would NOT be drafted.
So it seems 195 was the last number drafted, not 231. That's what I meant......

Re: The draft lottery

Seems like I would have been drafted, my number was 194. Although some sources say the last number drafted was 194, and others say 195. This was for men born between 1-1-'44 and 12-31-'50. So I would have been one of the last drafted. I think Robert's 231 number may not be correct, according to the...
