Re: The first after the Stand Alone Reunion

Couldn't agree more, Robert. It was great to finally meet you and Jerry and to spend time with old Delta brothers. You and Jerry are to be congratulated for doing the heavy lifting to get this reunion off the ground. Thanks for all your efforts.

Re: C,1st and 11th

Niner, Just took a look at this string. The maps brought back memories about how shaky the arty support was during that Cambodia operation. The command element of Delta Company was on the west side of Chantrea at max range from the guns and on the gun target line. I called in WP rounds to suppress N...

Re: Karl Lowe's passing

I attended the memorial service for Karl Lowe last Sunday in Fairfax, VA. Karl's three children offered moving tributes to their father, and the chapel was filled with many other relatives, friends, colleagues and comrades whom Karl had touched in his life. His is my own tribute to him that I read: ...

I felt the way you did when I got back and swore the gummint would never get my sons to fight their fruitless wars. Iraq and Afghanistan certainly didn't change my outlook. I don't think my ambivalence about my own service will ever leave me either.

Re: Veterans Day...Armistice Day

Robert, Just got back from free breakfast at Denny's. My friend Peter (a grunt in 4/47th, 9th Division, 68-69) and I sat and listened to a blue water navy guy next to us who chewed on some young guy's ear nonstop about his tour in Vietnam. We both laughed. Denny's got its PR, and this guy got his ch...

Here's an ad posted in the NYTimes today that, I think, summarizes the Israeli position well. Propaganda? As long as Hamas and Hezbollah and other Mideast jihadists refuse to recognize the Israeli nation and seek its destruction, the facts listed in this ad will continue to convince many in the West...

Re: 6/31 Reenactment/Living History Group Questions

Delta 75, After rereading my post, I guess it didn't seem to make complete sense. In the back of my mind was the situation where we had one platoon commanded by a platoon sergeant for a while and Cpt. Lowe even asked me to take over the platoon. We did have a lot of turnover. The numbers: two rotate...

Re: 6/31 Reenactment/Living History Group Questions

Vern, When I became Delta's FO, I replaced Lt. Byron Dickson, but I guess by 69-70 there just weren't many FO's in the pipeline for some units. When I was commissioned, only a handful of my fellow butter bars at U. of Mo. were sent to Ft. Sill. Everyone else was infantry. Even so, platoon leaders we...

I remember trading C''s to the Navy at Tra Cu for LRRP rations. I found them pretty tasty after choking down C-rats for so long.

Kris Lowe, please share these thoughts with your dad and tell him I am thinking about him every day and pulling for his full recovery. Vern, Yes, the article was written by Karl Lowe. I was Karl's FO in Cambodia, and Morgan was the 3rd platoon leader. He was killed in a fire fight in a village called Tnaot. We were holding our own until a gunship dropped an errant rocket on top of us. The blast killed Morgan and the 2nd platoon ser...

Niner, We certainly earned those air medals. As often as we flew on eagle flights, we probably deserved more than one. Your experience with the 101st sounded familiar. After I was transferred to the 4th, I was awarded two bronze stars for meritorious service. Maybe for running trucks down Route 19 d...

Robert, Interesting to read about the memory quiz. I didn't take it, but I might have been a guinea pig for some of the VA testing two years ago when I went through the initial health screening at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. The doc walked me through the memory protocol, and I played along for ...

VA DENTAL INSURANCE

VA is now offering dental insurance through Delta Dental and MetLife. The Delta rate is quite good, so I'm trying to enroll. Their system is buggy right now and I haven't gotten in yet, but it looks to be worth the trouble. Check it out!
